Th e goal of this study was to introduce a method for estimating stress analysis as an effi cient procedure for evaluating the strength of mitered corner joints in furniture structures. Tests were carried out to determine the eff ects of panel type, distance between the centers of dovetail holes and the edges of joints (10, 20, and 30 mm), and type of dovetail key on the load-carrying capacity of mitered corner joints under a diagonal tension load. Specimens were constructed of overlaid medium-density fi berboard (LamMDF) and particleboard (LamPb) and connected with butterfl y and H-shaped dovetail keys. Polyvinyl acetate adhesive was used to assemble the joints. Specimens were tested under diagonal tension loads and the corresponding combined stress analysis was conducted using the following formulas:Total stress at the outer edge, Total stress at the inner edge, where σb is bending stress, σa is axial stress, P is axial failure load, L is half of the span length, and t and b are the thickness and width of the joint members. Test results showed that corner joints constructed of LamMDF were 13% stronger than joints constructed of LamPb. For the specimens constructed of both panel types, a 10-mm distance between the dovetail holes and the edges of joints gave better results than distances of 20 and 30 mm. No signifi cant diff erences were observed between the 2 types of dovetail keys. Total compression stresses at the outer edge were 2 times greater than the total tension stresses at the inner edge of the joints.

Ziziphus oxyphylla and Cedrela Serrata plants have a folkloric use in Pakistan for treatments of different ailments, i.e., Jaundice, Hepatitis, Diabetes, and antimicrobial. Until now, none of the research studies have reported any phytochemical work on leaves of these two plants. This study aimed to isolate and perform phytochemical analysis in order to search for the constituent having the active role in treatment of the aforementioned ailments. A bioassay-guided fractionation and isolation procedure was used to isolate the concerned phytochemicals present in leaf extracts of Z. oxyphylla and C. serrata. The process involved the hyphenated techniques, i.e., Flash Chromatography, Semi-Preparative HPLC/DAD, UPLC/MS, and NMR in order to isolate and elucidate the structure of the phytochemicals. Seven compounds (1–7) were isolated and identified as flavonoids, more in particular glycosides of quercetin and kaempferol. They showed DPPH scavenging activity, compound 3 (isoquercitrin) being the most active one with an IC50 of 10.8 µg/mL (positive control quercetin; IC50 3.6 µg/mL). The superoxide-radical scavenging and total antioxidant (ABTS) assays indicated IC50 values ranging from 200 to 910 µg/mL and 170 to 320 µg/mL, respectively (positive control quercetin: 374 and 180 µg/mL, respectively). Furthermore, these compounds had low IC50 values for inhibition of protein glycation (AGEs inhibition), ranging from 530 to 818 µg/mL, comparable to aminoguanidine (510 µg/mL) used as a positive control. This study resulted in the identification of seven flavonoid glycosides for the first time from the leaves of Z. oxyphylla and C. serrata with antioxidative and antiglycating activities.

Herein we report the synthesis of 13-, 14-and 15-membered cyclic lactams, using Grubbs' RCM method in 25, 52 and 46% yields respectively. The cis-enamide functional group was successfully introduced into these cyclic lactams by syn sulfoxide elimination The synthetic cyclic lactams resemble natural cyclic peptides. Our synthetic methodology provides a simple route to making medium-sized cyclic lactams that could be used as models to mimic the β-turn in natural proteins, an important marker in understanding their biological activity.
