New 5′-Nucleotidase Inhibitors, NPF-86IA, NPF-86IB, NPF-86IIA, and NPF-86IIB fromAreca catechu; Part I. Isolation and Biological Properties

Abstract: The AcOEt eluate (45.8 g) was repeatedly chromatographed over silica gel with CHC13-MeOH and benzene-AcOEt to give betulonic acid as colorless powder (424 mg). Determination of antihepatotoxicity Assays using CCI4-and GaIN-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes in vitro were carried out as described previously (11, 12).

“…It is well known for its therapeutic uses in dermatological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Further, due to the presence of great percentage of acidic compounds the same is also used to reduce pH that inhibits the growth of microbial cells [36,38,56,84]. Catechin Obtained from the same is known antioxidant and reported to exhibit In vivo antioxidant properties against free radical attack [67,73].…”

“…Polyphenolic substances which possess antitumour activity and inhibit 5'-nucleotidase from a variety of sources have been isolated from the seeds of Areca catechu (betel nuts) Uchino et al, 1988) as well as from wine grapes . Since murine macrophages are directly stimulated by these inhibitors and no general cytotoxic effects are observed, the antitumor activity might be through potentiation of the immunity of host animals (Matsuo et al, 1989).…”
