New and previously known species of Oenonidae (Polychaeta: Annelida) from Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Abstract: The family Oenonidae consists of Eunicida species with prionognath jaws. Its Australian fauna had been reported to comprise six species belonging to Arabella, Drilonereis, and Oenone. This study provides descriptions for four new species, redescriptions for three species (two previously recorded and a new record, Drilonereis cf. logani) and diagnoses for the genera recorded from Australia. Currently, eleven species of oenonids, distributed in three genera, are known for the Australian coast. On Lizard Island, … Show more

“…Nonetheless, the type locality of H. parthenopeia (Naples, Italy) is far from that of H. okudai (Japan). Among oenonids known from Japan, Oenone fulgida resembles H. okudai but these two species are distinguishable because bidentate hooded hooks are present in O. fulgida but not in H. okudai (Imajima 1967;Zanol and Ruta 2015). Based on these reasons, we identified the present specimen as H. okudai.…”

“…Frequently reported from Greece and other parts of the Mediterranean (Çınar 2005, Castelli et al 2008, Ayari et al 2009, Çınar et al 2014, Mikac 2015) and considered cosmopolitan. May however constitute a species complex comprising two cryptic species or populations along the East Coast of North America, differing in the maxillary formula (Colbath 1989, Zanol and Ruta 2015). …”
