New Antiviral Drugs, Vaccines and Classic Public Health Interventions against SARS Coronavirus

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by one of two recently discovered coronaviruses. The virus is emergent from South East (SE) Asian mammals: either the civet cat, a related species or a rat species. The virus has a long incubation period and low reproduction number (R0 value) and hence the first outbreak in 2004 was controlled by hygiene and quarantine. However, the healthcare system was compromised and the economic cost was extremely high. Fortunately, the virus is easily cultivated in Vero E… Show more

In other studies in which ribavirin was evaluated for efficacy in cells less likely to phosphorylate the compound, ribavirin was not efficacious against SARS-CoV ( Barnard et al, 2004b;Ströher et al, 2004;Chen et al, 2004;Tan et al, 2004).…”

“…The spread of SARS-CoV and the severity of the highly contagious disease it causes have aroused scientific interest in coronaviruses. In order to prevent the circle of infection from widening, antiviral chemotherapy and prophylaxis have been developed (Oxford et al, 2005;Shigeta and Yamase, 2005;Tan et al, 2004).…”
