New Applications in Photodynamic Therapy Introduction

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy is now recognized as a legitimate therapy for both palliative and potentially curative treatment of solid tumors. This represents a major achievement for investigators who have committed their careers to PDT. Scientific research characteristically runs well ahead of accepted views and technologies. This Symposium-in-Print perhaps provides a snapshot of the potential for this technology during the next two decades.

“…Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising new modality for the treatment of a variety of cancers as well as some dermatological and ophthalmic diseases 1,[20][21][22][23][24] The main advantage of PDT over conventional cancer chemotherapy is the capability to localize the treatment, by using selective light exposure to the tumor site. 1, 25 Typical PDT treatment involves systemic administration of a photosensitizer drug, followed by localized light exposure at the tumor site, using visible or near-infrared (NIR) light.…”

“…Photodynamic therapy (PDT) mediated by Photofrin has recently been approved as a therapeutic modality for specific types of malignant tumours (Levy, 1996). This breakthrough further stimulates research efforts aimed at developing more effective phototherapeutic protocols, as well as at broadening the scope of PDT and overcoming its present limitations.…”

“…EPN, Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital, and Gonzalo Gonzalez Dermatological Hospital are executing this international project to diagnose and treat superficial basal cell carcinoma (CBC) with mediated PDT. This technique destroys tumor tissues by using a specific wavelength in the presence of oxygen to activate a photosensitizer [7,8].…”
