Our recent reports on the synthesis of Sn-incorporated mesoporous SBA-15 materials have been reviewed. The preparation of the samples with different Si/Sn ratios followed two procedures, the first is the post-synthesis modification of SBA-15 by impregnation with Sn chloride or acetate, and the second is the direct method in which Sn chloride was introduced in to Si precursor along with amphiphilic triblock copolymer, while varying the n H 2 O =n HCl ratio of the synthesis gel. Detailed characterization of the Sn-SBA-15 samples by a variety of techniques shows how the synthesis procedures influence the properties of the samples that reflect on the differences in (a) the structural features, (b) morphology and textural properties, such as the pore characteristics, (c) the possible location of Sn 4? ions in the meso silica structure and their reducibility, (d) the nature of the Sn species and their the coordination sphere and (e) the acid-base characteristics. We developed a possible model for the localization of Sn species in SBA-15 pore structure for different conditions of preparation. This report includes our investigations on the catalytic properties of these Sn-SBA-15 samples in 3 industrially important reactions, viz., trans-esterification of diethyl malonate, synthesis of nopol by Prins condensation of b-pinene with para-formaldehyde and the epoxidation of norbornene. In each of this reaction, while demonstrating the catalytic role of Sn species, we show that the requirement of the type and the environment of Sn species are different for these reactions.

The thermal phase separation and subsequent leaching of sodium borosilicate glasses is a well established route for the preparation of porous glasses exhibiting adjustable pore sizes in the range of 1 nm up to almost 1 mm as well as a very flexible geometric shape. The combination of this route with a large spectrum of synthesis strategies for the implementation of an additional pore system enables the preparation of hierarchically porous glass-based materials. This review covers a wide range of preparative routes for hierarchically porous silica materials starting from the sodium borosilicate glass with a special emphasis on the very recent developments in this versatile field of materials engineering.

In this contribution, the template assisted synthesis of porous carbons by chemical vapor deposition in porous concrete templates has been described for the first time. Porous concrete made templates can be obtained in almost any geometrical shape and are therefore attractive templates to prepare porous carbon monoliths. The carbon deposition process in porous concrete follows a three-stage-course consisting in an initial period, a period of fast carbon deposition and a period of slow carbon deposition. The carbon growth within the template pores occurs obviously plug-like from the inner to the outer sphere. Any continuous covering of the template pore walls by carbon could not be observed. In difference to porous concrete, the carbon deposition in silica gel is strongly accompanied by mass transfer limitations. For porous concrete, such strong effect has not been observed obviously due to its hierarchical pore system. The template materials have been loaded with carbon by chemical vapor deposition in a flow reactor. The process of the template pore filling has been characterized by the time dependence of the template mass gain. The materials have been characterized by means of X-ray tomography and nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, respectively.
