New choristoderes (Reptilia: Diapsida) from the Upper Cretaceous and Palaeocene, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, and phylogenetic relationships of Choristodera

Abstract: New choristoderan fossils from the Late Cretaceous and Palaeocene of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada, are described: incomplete maxillae and dentaries from the Upper Cretaceous Oldman Formation, Alberta, extend the range of the primitive Cteniogenys from the Jurassic in the North American Western Interior; an incomplete dentary from the Palaeocene Ravenscrag Formation, Saskatchewan, comprises the first occurrence of the crocodile‐like Simoedosaurus in Canada and the earliest record of the genus; well‐preserve… Show more

“…1), gavialiform reptiles with cordiform skulls, long rostra, and short necks. All recent analyses support the placement of these four genera in a clade, Neochoristodera (Evans and Manabe, 1999;Gao and Fox, 1998;Matsumoto et al, 2007Matsumoto et al, , 2009Skutchas, 2008). The more basal 'non-neochoristoderes' are smaller (0.3-1.0m) and more diverse in their morphology.…”

“…Putative records of non-neochoristoderes are limited to the Oldman and the Dinosaur Park formations, Alberta (Irvine locality and Dinosaur Provincial Park). These small specimens were assigned to Cteniogenys (Gao and Fox, 1998), but the material (incomplete dentaries and maxillae) is not sufficiently complete or diagnostic for generic identification (Matsumoto et al, 2009), especially with such a large age gap.…”
