New results obtained in this work from measurements of γ radiation following fission of 248 Cm and 252 Cf, performed using Eurogam2 and Gammashpere arrays, respectively, reveal excitations corresponding to γ vibrations and triaxial deformation present in 100 Zr and 102 Zr nuclei. This is the first observation of non-axial bands in Zr isotopes. Such excitations probably occur due to competing prolate and oblate configurations, identified recently in these nuclei. Evolution of γ softness and triaxiality in Zr isotopes is observed in function of the neutron number.

The β decay of the semimagic Sn isotopes 136,137,138 Sn has been studied at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The first experimental information on excited states was obtained for 137 Sb while, in the case of 136 Sb, the established excitation scheme could be extended by ten previously unidentified levels. In the decay of the most-neutron-rich isotope 138 Sn, two γ rays were observed for the first time. The new experimental results, in combination with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations, provide the first information with respect to the evolution of the 0g 7/2 and 1d 5/2 proton single-particle states with increasing neutron number beyond N = 84.

+ 2 bands in 98 Sr and 100 Zr, populated in spontaneous fission of 248 Cm and 252 Cf have been studied using Eurogam2 and Gammasphere arrays. Phenomenological classification of excited 0 + levels in even-even nuclei of the A∼100 region into four categories is presented and an interpretation for each category is proposed. Highly-deformed, 0 + 1 ground states and low-energy, 0 + 2 levels in both nuclei are probably due to the 2p-2h excitation of two neutrons from the 9/2 − [404] extruder to the low-Ω, prolate and the 11/2 − [505], oblate orbitals originating from the h 11/2 shell, respectively. Candidates for 0 + , β vibrational states in A∼100 region are suggested at N>60.
