New Gear-Fault-Detection Parameter by Use of Joint Time-Frequency Distribution

Abstract: A new gear-fault-detection parameter called NP4 is introduced. This fault-detection parameter utilizes the properties of the joint time-frequency analysis given by the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) and kurtosis. With the WVD, the instantaneous power of the gear-vibration signature for one complete rotor revolution can be obtained. The presence of single-gear-tooth damage can be manifested by the existence of an instantaneous power distribution with a peakedness larger than the normal distribution. The normal… Show more

“…Ville [46] further developed Wigner's function to compute the instantaneous frequency of the signal at each time instant. The resulting Wigner-Ville distribution of time and frequency [32,40,41] attempts to express frequency as a function of time. Since signal frequency is related to signal energy, one can interpret Wigner-Ville distribution as the energy map of a signal in time and frequency.…”

“…This makes NP4 a useful method for detecting the damage without tracing the vibration history of the gear. NP4 can be defined as the normalized kurtosis of the signal power [43,44]. NP4 is given as 320 Wavelet transform analysis can be applied by "convolving a signal with time shifted and dilated versions of a nonstationary wavelet basis function" [5].…”

“…If a dangerous crack is started in the gear, the structural safety will be significantly reduced and may even induce accidents in some cases. Therefore, the study of damage detection and diagnosis for gear system has become very important and attracted more and more attention for many years by scientists all over the world [1,2].…”
