New Genera, Species, Synonymies, and Combinations in the “Lygus Complex” from Japan, with Discussion on Peltidolygus Poppius and Warrisia Carvalho (Heteroptera: Miridae: Mirinae)

Abstract: Three new genera, Pinalitopsis, Nepiolygus, and Apolygopsis, are proposed to accommodate the following new species of Japanese mirine plant bugs: P. rhodopotnia from the Kii Peninsula and Shikoku, and N. arare and A. furvocarinatus from the Ryukyu Islands. A new species of the genus Pachylygus Yasunaga, 1994, P. anthrax, is also described from Shikoku.

“…All analyses recover Neolygus as a monophyletic group (Figs ; Appendix S3), with strong support (Bsv = 12, BS = 100, PP = 1). The genus Neolygus was considered a subgenus of Lygus (Knight, ; Carvalho, ; Kelton, ) and/or Lygocoris (Josifov & Kerzhner, ; Yasunaga, ), until Yasunaga et al () upgraded it to the genus level. Subsequently, Yasunaga et al () also argued discrete origins of Neolygus and Lygocoris as independent lineages based on distribution patterns.…”

“…The terminology of external structure mainly follows Schuh (1976), Schwartz (2008), Schwartz & Foottit (1998), and Yasunaga et al (2002). Genital terminology mainly follows the schemes of Cassis (2008) for males, and Schwartz (2008) and Yasunaga & Schwartz (2007) for females.…”

“…This new genus is at first sight reminiscent of Pachylygus Yasunaga or some taxa of Lygus (in broad sense, see Schwartz and Foottit 1998, Yasunaga et al 2002). However, the less punctate and rather shagreened dorsal surface and atypical shape of the parameres suggest that Fangumellus is evidently not closely related to those taxa.…”

“…Most similar in general appearance to certain species of Lygus Hahn, Pachylygus Yasunaga or Peltidolygus Poppius (cf. Schwartz and Foottit 1998, Yasunaga et al 2002); distinguished by somewhat shagreened pronotum without clear punctures, rather flat, not developed scutellum and unique shape of parameres.…”
