“…The ACo gives also rise to a moderate projection to the medial part of the central nucleus, described also in rats (Petrovich et al, ; Savander et al, ). Therefore, ACo is reciprocally connected with the basomedial nucleus, which has been recently shown to be involved in controlling fear and anxiety (Adhikari et al, ) and social stress (Mesquita et al, ). Moreover, the ACo projects directly to the medial central nucleus, which is a key structure in activating the fear responses (Ehrlich et al, ).…”

“…We used the list of differentiated genes to query an Allen Brain Atlas dataset that reports gene expression in hundreds of brain regions (Hawrylycz, Lein et al 2012). Rock-sanddivergent genes were enriched for the basomedial nucleus of the amygdala, a sub-region of the telencephalon (padj = 0.001) that regulates fear, anxiety, and physiological responses to territorial intruders in rodents (Adhikari, Lerner et al 2015, Mesquita, Abreu et al 2016, and has been linked to Social Anxiety Disorder in humans (Carvalho, Nóbrega et al 2020). Finally, we queried databases of genes involved in human disease.…”

“…In their study, injection of the bicuculline, a GABA A antagonist, into the BMA produced dose-related hypertension and tachycardia, while muscimol inhibited these effects (Yoshida et al, 2002). In contrast, Mesquita et al (2016) recently reported cardiovascular changes in response to muscimol injections into the BMA in awake rats. The conflicting reports may result from the suppressive effects of urethane on the cardiovascular system (Field et al, 1993;Bencze et al, 2013), or may simply be a reflection of the complex neuronal input and output system of the amygdala.…”

“…However, the results obtained were not consistent, and this was attributed to differences in experimental setup, i.e., anaesthetised (Yoshida et al, 2002) versus awake (Mesquita et al, 2016) rats. Thus, there is no consensus on the inherent mechanisms but an indication of physiological interaction with brainstem autonomic control centres.…”
