Unlike water applications, the photocatalytic technique utilizing light-emitting-diodes as an alternative light source to conventional lamp has rarely been applied for low-level indoor air purification. Accordingly, this study investigated the applicability of UV-LED to annular-type photocatalytic reactor for removal of indoor-level benzene and toluene at a low concentration range associated with indoor air quality issues. The characteristics of photocatalyst was determined using an X-ray diffraction meter and a scanning electron microscope. The photocatalyst baked at 350 o C exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiencies(PDEs) for both benzene and toluene, and the photocatalysts baked at three higher temperatures(450, 550, and 650 o C) did similar PDEs for these compounds. The average PDEs over a 3-h period were 81% for benzene and close to 100% for toluene regarding the photocatalyst baked at 350 o C, whereas they were 61 and 74% for benzene and toluene, respectively, regarding the photocatalyst baked at 650 o C. As the light intensity increased from 2.4 to 3.5 MW cm -1 , the average PDE increased from 36 to 81% and from 44% to close to 100% for benzene and toluene, respectively. In addition, as the flow rate increased from 0.1 to 0.5 L min -1 , the average PDE decreased from 81% to close to zero and from close to 100% to 7% for benzene and toluene, respectively. It was found that the annular-type photocatalytic reactor inner-inserted with UV-LEDs can effectively be applied for the decomposition of low-level benzene and toluene under the operational conditions used in this study.

OCCURRENCE AND DEGRADATION OF QUINOLONES BY ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES. In this review, the presence of quinolones in the environment, their risks and the available processes for water decontamination were addressed. Their occurrence in surface waters and also in soil raises concerns about the risk of the development of resistant bacteria and other potential chronic effects. AOPs (UV/H 2 O 2 , Fenton, photo-Fenton, and UV/TiO 2 ) and ozonation proved effective for degrading these emerging contaminants due to hydroxyl radical formation, surpassing the efficacy of conventional methods. In addition, the main degradation mechanisms of these drugs as well as data on residual biological activity were analyzed.Keywords: antimicrobials; degradation mechanisms; toxicity. INTRODUÇÃOAntimicrobianos são definidos como compostos naturais, sinté-ticos ou semi-sintéticos, cuja finalidade é prevenir ou tratar doenças infecciosas causadas por micro-organismos patogênicos, 1 tanto nos seres humanos como na medicina veterinária. Visto que não são totalmente metabolizados durante o uso terapêutico, os antimicrobianos estão presentes no esgoto doméstico principalmente como resultado da excreção humana. O uso de antimicrobianos na atividade pecuária contribui, também, para a sua introdução no meio ambiente, como resultado de processos de manufatura, disposição irregular ou excreção metabólica.2 Dessa forma, esses compostos são continuamente lançados no ambiente e, considerando sua característica recalcitrante de difícil remoção/degradação, são considerados pseudopersistentes.Existem aproximadamente onze diferentes classes de antimicrobianos, 3 que se diferenciam por sua estrutura química ou mecanismos de ação no tratamento específico de determinado patógeno. As quinolonas, antimicrobianos sintéticos, são eficientes no tratamento de infecções por bactérias Gram-positivas e Gram-negativas e são largamente empregadas tanto na medicina humana como veteriná-ria. Bactérias Gram-negativas são aquelas que possuem uma parede celular com poucas camadas de peptideoglicana e uma segunda membrana de lipopolissacarídeo. No processo de coloração, a lavagem com álcool rompe a camada externa de lipopolissacarídeo e o corante é removido por meio da camada de peptideoglicana. Consequentemente, as células Gram-negativas permanecem incolores até serem coradas com a safranina (segundo corante), adquirindo tonalidade rosa-avermelhada. Como exemplo, pode-se citar: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (causadora de infecções no aparelho pulmonar, urinário e respiratório), Escherichia coli (causadora de infecções urinárias) e Salmonella (causadora de intoxicações alimentares). As bactérias Gram-positivas, como por exemplo, a Streptococcus pneumoniae, possuem uma parede com mais camadas de peptideoglicana que as bactérias Gram-negativas. A high‐efficient rotating disk photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reactor with macro light harvesting pyramid‐surface electrode

A series of pyramid‐surface TiO2/Ti electrodes were proposed, fabricated, and used in a rotating disk photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reactor to treat rhodamine B (RB) solution. Compared with conventional planar electrode, pyramid‐surface electrode exhibited much lower light reflectivity, larger photocurrent, and better treatment efficiency. For samples containing 20 to 150 mg L−1 RB, 100– 98% color removal, and 87–30% COD removal were obtained in 150 min using 1/3 (h/w) pyramid‐surface electrode, much higher than 98–77% and 48–9% obtained by a conventional planer electrode. The excellent treatment performance attributed to two major reasons: (a) enhanced light harvest resulted from multiple reflections of irradiation light on the pyramid‐surface, and (b) enlarged electrode surface area enabling the electrode to carry more TiO2 catalyst and pollutants for treatment.
