New porphyrin dendrimers with fluorenyl-based connectors: a simple way to improving the optical properties over dendrimers featuring 1,3,5-phenylene connectors

Abstract: Dendrimers with new fluorenyl-based connectors have been synthesized and characterized. Their detailed luminescence properties and selected photophysical properties are discussed in the frame of two-photon-induced theranostics.

“…660 nm and 725 nm is strongly quenched for 5a-5d in CH 2 Cl 2 solutions (ESI) compared to that previously found for the reference compound 6 (18%). 34 Thus, fluorescence quantum yields (Φ F ) below 1% are found for all organometallic derivatives, with Φ F values decreasing from 5a to 5d, i.e. when increasing the number of Ru(II) substituents (ESI: Figure S15).…”

“…The yield of 7d is low, the reaction of necessity being repeated from 11 to obtain sufficient quantities (the isolated yield of 7d from 11 is 28%). 34 Only one (the trans isomer, 7b) of the two possible isomers of the bis(terminal alkyne) derivative was isolated. The pendant alkynes of 7a-7d were then metallated using the corresponding amounts of the ruthenium(II) salt 8[PF 6 ] (Scheme 1).…”

“…The insertion of more fluorenyl groups into the branches of 35d-G 1 , either in a conjugated or non-conjugated way in 35h-G 1 or 35i-G 1 , respectively, was also considered. The conjugated representative 35h-G 1 was shown to be a particularly efficient TPA chromophore and to exhibit a high two-photon-induced singlet oxygen generation efficiency, the fluorene connectors allowing the improvement of the electronic communication between the branches and the porphyrin core, as compared to the 1,3,5-phenylene connectors of 35d-G 1 [ 88 ].…”

“…In addition, multi-branched structures can reduce the aggregating and self-quenching effect, which benefits the strong TP fluorescence . Although the high efficiency of TPA is always a prerequisite for TPA applications and organic systems with multi-branched structures and various types of central cores that have been studied, it does not guarantee the superior performance of TPA molecules in the abovementioned applications. As a more fundamental perspective, the implementation of TPA molecules for artificial lighting, microscopy, or up-converted lasing applications is crucially dependent on how well they can dissipate the absorbed energy in the form of light emission instead of through non-radiative decay processes.…”
