New protic ionic liquids for fungi and bacteria removal from paper heritage artefacts

Abstract: New protic ionic liquids with 1-ammonium-2-propanol cation and nine different anions were prepared in order to study their antimicrobial activity and possible application for fungi and bacteria removal from deteriorated paper heritage.

“…The optimal biological effect at a specific cation chain length is regularly due to a combination of hydrophobicity, absorption capacity, and critical micelle concentration (CMC). Higher molecular weight ionic liquids tend to be fixed better in the structure of wood, with minimal leaching potential [ 108 ].…”

“…Still, these tend to necessitate a higher critical concentration to be effective. The higher amount needed for low molecular weight ILs to be effective could be due to their higher absorption into the wood cell walls/ microfibrils, only a low amount remaining at the surface to interact with the fungal hyphae or with the secreted enzymes [ 108 , 109 ].…”

“…Ionic liquids have been widely studied for biomass fractionation processes and even in treating paper artifacts, paper restoration and antifungal agents for wood preservation [ 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 ]. The ILs that qualify for this application presents several characteristics like the presence of bulkier substituents, halogens or oxygen heteroatoms in the cation side-chain or even the presence of sp 2 double bonds (like alkyl radicals) that promote the antifungal character of ILs due to a better interaction with the fungal cell membrane.…”

“…Protic ionic liquids, based on the 1-ammonium-2-propanol cation and a series of carboxylates anions, have been recently proposed as "green" cleaner agents, as an alternative to thymol [78]. Schmitz et al [79] observed that imidazolium ILs used in "paper de-acidification and reinforcement processes" have high similarity with well-known antimicotic agents such as Clotrimazole and Miconazole.…”
