New records of aphid species (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) for the Turkish fauna from Samsun province

Abstract: Approximately 4400 species of aphids have been identified worldwide. About 250 species are serious pests and cause important losses of yield (Remaudiére and Remaudiére, 1997;Blackman and Eastop, 2006). In the United States, crop losses caused by pests annually have been about 30%, despite the best available pest control technologies. However, in developing countries, including Turkey, pest-caused losses are much more than 50% (Ruberson, 1999). Turkey is one of the largest countries in Europe, has its richest f… Show more

“…Considering the number of species in the current checklist about 10% aphid species being known from Iran. Comparing to neighbor countries the number of aphid species is nearly the same as in Turkey (Akyürek et al, 2019) i.e. 543 and 555 species for Iran and Turkey respectively.…”

“…Since 1970s local aphid taxonomists Hodjat and Rezwani started intensive investigation of Iranian aphid fauna. Five hundred and fifty five species have been recorded from Turkey (Akyürek et al, 2019), 300 species from Pakistan (Naumann-Etienne & Remaudiére, 1995), 194 species from Israel (Swirski & Amitai, 1999) and 167 species from Lebanon and Syria (Remaudiére & Talhouk, 1999). In Iran 486 species are recorded (Rezwani & Radjabi, 1986;Rezwani et al 1994;Rezwani 2010).…”

“…During sampling, the first 2 species were heavily visited by Lasius niger and the latter by Formica polyctena . Cavariella aegopodii and M. rosae are only occasionally tended by ants ( Dhatwalia and Gautam 2009 ; Akyürek et al 2016 ) and were not visited by ants at the time of sampling. Aphid identification was checked by different keys and guides ( Heie 1980 ; Blackman and Eastop 2018 ; Blackman et al 2019 ).…”

“…At present, there are approximately 5000 species in the world and 1600 species have been reported in Europe Eastop 2023, Nieto Nafria et al 2013). For example, the aphid fauna of Turkey is up to 632 (Akyürek et al 2019, Görür et al 2017, Görür et al 2023, Kök and Özdemir 2021, Kök and Özdemir 2022, Özdemir 2020) and 89 of these aphid species, most of which belong to the Aphididae family, are in citrus orchards (Satar et al 2014). Five species are known to seriously affect citrus plants in Turkey and they include Aphis gossypii Glover, Aphis spiraecola Patch, Aphis craccivora Koch, Myzus (N.) persicae (Sulzer) ve Aphis aurantii (Boyer de Fonscolombe) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (Saraç et al 2015, Satar et al 2014, Uygun et al 1992, Uygun and Satar 2008, Zeren 1989).…”
