New Self-Isolated Wideband MIMO Antenna System for 5G mm-Wave Applications Using Slot Characteristics

Abstract: This paper proposes a simple novel technique for self-isolating a MIMO antenna for mmwave applications. MIMO antenna elements with inter-element separation of 0.2 mm (0.023λ at 35 GHz) and measured high isolation (> 50 dB) are presented. By observing the concentration of surface waves on the radiating patch, several rigorously optimized slots of different shapes, positions, and dimensions are etched on the patch to enhance the inter-element isolation and increase the bandwidth within 28-37.5 GHz. The circuit m… Show more

“…The primary advantage of this approach is its ability to improve antenna isolation based on the intrinsic characteristics of the antenna itself, eliminating the need for additional decoupling networks. Several representative works have been presented [19], [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], [25]. In [19], the mutual coupling is mitigated by adjusting the feeding position.…”

“…Another method is to use a special ground design with slots [20]. In [21], [22], the patch is cut with various shapes of slots. In [23], the self-decoupling technique is based on the weak field on the patch.…”

“…The 8×8 MIMO method is also more efficient than 68% [13]. Self-isolating mm-wave 1×2 MIMO antenna with a gain of 9.6 dB, extreme isolation of 51 dB, efficiency above 90%, and ECC smaller than 0.005 for a given frequency of 28-37.5 GHz [14]. The 5G NR LTE and WLAN 5 GHz bands can all be covered by the authors' proposed 8×8 wideband MIMO antenna with isolation more significant than 12 dB.…”

“…Recently, several low coupling design techniques have been proposed to reduce the mutual coupling of adjacent antennas. The details are as follows: defective ground structure (DGS) [ 14 ], parasitic element [ 15 ], electromagnetic band gap (EBG) [ 16 ], neutralization line [ 17 ] and decoupling network [ 18 ] methods. Some of these methods require the antenna spatial distance, and others degrade the radiation of MIMO antennas or require complex construction MIMO antenna designs.…”
