“…There are only three species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 reported from turtles to date (Duszynski & Morrow, 2014): Isospora chelydrae McAllister, Upton & Trauth, 1990, from the common snapping turtle Chelydra serpentina Linnaeus (Chelydridae) in Arkansas, USA (McAllister et al, 1990), Isospora testudae Davronov, 1985, described from Horsfield's tortoise Testudo horsfieldi Gray (Testudinidae) in Uzbekistan (Davronov, 1985), and Isospora rodriguesae Lainson, Da Silva, Franco & De Souza, 2008 from the yellowfooted tortoise Chelonoidis denticulatus Linnaeus (Testudinidae) in Brazil (Lainson et al, 2008). “…In addition, the oöcysts of I. rodriguesae sporulate exogenously, whereas those of I. gopheri sporulate both endogenously and exogenously. Finally, I. rodriguesae is known only from a host collected in the primary rainforest of Brazil (Lainson et al, 2008), while I. gopheri was obtained from tortoises native to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Taken altogether, the differences between I. rodriguesae and the new form justify separating the latter as a new species of Isospora.…”

“…The oocysts are ovoid to almost spherical, 10.6 (8-12) × 8 (7-10) μm, and are therefore considerably smaller than oocysts of Eimeria collieie n. sp. Lainson et al (2008) reported four new Eimeria species in Geochelone spp. (Chelonia: Testudinidae) from Amazonian, Brazil.…”

“…2-5). To date, the 7 previously described oocysts of Testudines having mitra-like conical projections or irregular surfaces from at least 1 end of their oocyst are (1) Eimeria amazonensis from the red-footed tortoise, Chelonoidis (formerly Geochelone) carbonaria from Brazil (Lainson et al, 2008) 5) E. mitraria originally described from the Asian Chinese threekeeled pond turtle, Mauremys (formerly Chinemys) reevesii and subsequently described in multiple species of aquatic turtles on 3 continents (Laveran and Mesnil, 1902;Duszynski and Morrow, 2014); (6) Eimeria motelo from the yellow-footed tortoise, Chelonoidis (formerly Geochelone) denticulata, from Peru (Hur-kova´et al, 2000); and (7) Eimeria stylosa in the red-eared slider from Texas (McAllister and Upton, 1989). Overall, oocysts of E. grayi are considerably larger than other coccidians with surface projections (Table I).…”
