New stories for old: Narrative-based primary care in Great Britain.

Abstract: Narrative-based primary care has emerged in the United Kingdom through the convergence of narrative-based medicine and family systems medicine. This article describes how the convergence took place and gives an account of the theoretical ideas that underpin narrative-based primary care. The approach is illustrated with a case example and commentary. Drawing on both psychodynamic and dialogical theory, I argue that the role of primary care is often to find a new story that fits better than the old one.

“…Sen sijaan potilaskeskeisillä kerrontamenetelmillä voidaan saada esille potilaiden kertomuksia, jotka perustuvat heidän omiin kokemuksiinsa ja mieltymyksiinsä [17]. Potilaiden kertomukset tarjoavat terveyspalveluja tuottaville organisaatioille mahdollisuuden saavuttaa parempi ymmärrys potilaiden palvelukokemuksista [18]. Tehokkaimpana tapana potilaskokemuksen tutkimiseksi ja kuvailemiseksi pidetään yhdistelmää kvantitatiivisesta potilastyytyväisyystutkimuksesta ja laadullisesta potilaskeskeisestä kerrontamenetelmästä [19].…”

“…It draws on ideas from the emerging fi eld of narrative medicine (Hunter 1991 ;Greenhalgh and Hurwitz 1998 ;Charon 2006 ) and is part of a comprehensive approach to family medicine developed in the United Kingdom over the last 20 years called narrative-based primary care Launer 2006 ). This approach is unusual in offering not only a method of case discussion but a set of skills for encounters with patients, a system of teaching and a theoretical base that underlies all of these.…”
