“…Another perspective technology is the use of MEMS [94], [95], which has got various advantages such as easy production and miniature size, and can be easily integrated in a surgical instrument. The most suitable transducers for this approach can be PVDF films [94] and capacitors [96] due to their small size. In [95] the measurement sensitivity of MEMS stiffness sensor has been improved employing an array of force sensing units with two different mechanical stiffness parameters.…”

“…Perri et al . adopt this approach to present the pressure distribution at the sensor surface using a 2D colour‐mapped representation . Areas of different pressure can therefore be distinguished according to the shading on the display.…”

“…The most direct approach is to add a secondary display unit to the laparoscopic stack that can display information from the palpation instrument. Perri et al adopt this approach to present the pressure distribution at the sensor surface using a 2D colour-mapped representation (37). Areas of different pressure can therefore be distinguished according to the shading on the display.…”

“…However, due to the absence of a direct line of sight and sense of touch, MIS of the lung is challenged by tumor visualization and localization. Earlier work to address these issues includes the development and validation of a tactile sensing instrument (TSI) [2] that integrates a tactile sensor to localize and visualize embedded tumors. Although the TSI can accurately localize tumors with respect to the tissue surface, it cannot provide information related to the tumor depth.…”
