New Technologies Improving Aerodynamic Properties of Freight Vehicles

Abstract: Fuel consumption of heavy duty vehicles is caused by actual vehicle resistances acting during the vehicle motion. This paper deals with possibilities to reduce the vehicle aerodynamic resistance, air drag coefficient. This resistance effects the vehicle fuel consumption by higher vehicle velocities at most. There are evaluated actual values of vehicle air drag coefficient, possible devices reducing the air drag and the influence of chosen aerodynamic devices on the drag reduction and fuel consumption reduction. “…Thus, the engine power and torque increase did not automatically and always mean an increase of the amount of fuel consumed, too. The reason is that the combustion efficiency is being increased and, thus, the specific fuel consumption is being reduced [19].…”

“…Tables 14, 15 and 16 shows the percentage of fuel consumption change measured before and after data adjustment. Since there were neither any modification of transmission mechanical efficiency nor of the driving speed, the results in percentage are valid for both, a change of fuel consumption needed for driving a certain distance and a change of BSFC [17][18][19]. For better transparency, the results are also shown in the form of graphs, Fig.5.…”

“…The use of plastic materials for the production of motor vehicle parts also contributes to the reduction in mass as well as fuel consumption and emissions of harmful gases. Therefore, almost one-third of car parts are made of plastic, which consists of various polymer materials [43,44]. From that aspect, it is very important that the recycling of plastic parts takes place properly in accordance with the standards.…”
