New treatment modalities for granuloma faciale

Abstract: Granuloma faciale (GF) is a rare, chronic skin disorder in which numerous treatment modalities have been used without any consistent long-term effect. We report three cases of GF, two of which were successfully treated with the Laserscope potassium-titanyl-phosphate 532-nm laser within 2 weeks and one with topical tacrolimus ointment 0.1%. Our observations suggest that these new treatment modalities for GF, which we report here for the first time, can provide effective and non-invasive treatment for this disea… Show more

“…1 Foi descrito pela primeira vez em 1945 por Wigley como um "granuloma eosinofilico cutâneo" e posteriormente, em 1952, por Pinkus, como uma "granuloma facial". 2 De etiologia ainda obscura o granuloma facial parece ser mediado por imunocomplexos. Sabe-se que alguns fatores podem favorecer esta patologia, radiação, trauma, alergia e reação Arthus-like, 3 outros podem exacerbá-la: exposição ao sol e calor.…”

“…Granuloma faciale (GF) is an uncommon inflammatory dermatosis that is characterized by one or several asymptomatic brown red nodules or plaques on the face and polymorphous dense dermal infiltrates with vascular damage [1,2]. GF is known to be extremely resistant to treatment, although some cases may resolve spontaneously.…”

“…GF is known to be extremely resistant to treatment, although some cases may resolve spontaneously. Various treatments have been attempted, including topical or intralesional or systemic corticosteroids, dapsone, antimalarials, colchicine, topical tacrolimus, topical psoralen in combination with ultraviolet A (PUVA), and argon and CO 2 laser and surgical procedures [2][3][4]; however, none of these have been found to be reliably efficacious. Although GF is also known to take a long time to heal, few studies have reported the chronology of GF.…”
