New ultracool subdwarfs identified in large-scale surveys using Virtual Observatory tools

Abstract: Aims. We aim at developing an efficient method to search for late-type subdwarfs (metal-depleted dwarfs with spectral types ≥ M5) to improve the current statistics. Our objectives are: improve our knowledge of metal-poor low-mass dwarfs, bridge the gap between the late-M and L types, determine their surface density, and understand the impact of metallicity on the stellar and substellar mass function. Methods. We carried out a search cross-matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) and th… Show more

“…Since Lodieu et al (2017) detected only very early L subdwarfs, one may worry about the contribution of L subdwarfs of later spectral type. About the entire L subdwarf population, some hint can be obtained from the result of the ALLWISE sky survey by Kirkpatrick et al (2014).…”

“…Taurus, Perseus, IC 348, NGC 1333, and Upper-Scorpius are some of the nearby star forming regions which have been extensively surveyed by many authors down to a few Jupiter masses (e.g. Kraus et al 2017;Esplin & Luhman 2017;Best et al 2017;Lodieu et al 2017;Zhang et al 2018, many more).…”

“…Our sample increases by a factor of five the sample of subdwarfs presented in Rajpurohit et al (2016) and extend that recent work to the full sequence of the three metallicity classes of M subdwarfs. We will make publicly available all spectra through the late-type subdwarf archive at http://svo2.cab.inta-csic.es/vocats/ltsa/ (Lodieu et al 2017). Table 1.…”
