Study. -BaZrO 3:Gd is prepared by combustion of an aqueous solution of Ba(NO 3)2, ZrO(NO3)2, Gd(NO3)3, and urea (1. 80 C, 30 min; 2. muffle furnace, 550 C) which produces a foam-type fluffy mass that subsequently is calcined in air (alumina crucible, 1100 C, 3 h) for the removal of byproducts and the reduction of internal strain. EPR spectra of un-doped and Gd-doped samples are presented and discussed in detail. The excitation spectrum exhibits a dominant band with a maximum at 275 nm. Upon excitation at 275 nm, the emission spectrum exhibits a well-defined UV-B emission band with a maximum at 314 nm corresponding to the 6 P7/2 8 S7/2 transition. The phosphor is discussed as a promising candidate for applications in phototherapy lamps. -(SINGH*, V.; SIVARAMAIAH, G.; RAO, J. I.; WATANABE, S.; RAO, T. K. G.; JAGTAP, S. S.; SINGH, P. K.; J.
