“…Based on previous studies of Western cities (Anas, Arnott, and Small 1998; Garcia‐López, Hémet, and Viladecans‐Marsal 2017), we find that many factors influence the formation of the urban spatial structure, and all these factors can be divided into two categories: geographical factors and socioeconomic factors. An exploratory regression analysis is conducted to understand the formation of polycentric cities in China.…”

“…These research areas ignore numerous non‐urbanization areas and country‐level cities that are not closely related to the central urban area. Third, while many theoretical models and empirical cases of subcenter formation have focused on individual urban areas (Fujita and Ogawa 1982; Giuliano and Small 1999; Agarwal 2014; Garcia‐López, Hémet, and Viladecans‐Marsal 2017), an empirical analysis of the determinants of subcenter formation across cities is rare, except in the United States (McMillen and Smith 2003). In this study, we select several geographical and socioeconomic factors to investigate the determinants of polycentric urban development across Chinese cities, and then we compare the determinants of subcenter formation in large Chinese cities with those in large United States metropolitan areas.…”

“…Both theoretical models and empirical studies (Berliant & Wang, ; Lucas & Rossi‐Hansberg, ; Viguié, ) show that the polycentric structure of a city has positive and statistically significant impact on its economic growth and (Meijers & Burger, ). Characteristic of the largest cities of both developed (Glaeser & Kahn, ; McMillen, ) and developing countries (Huang, Liu, & Zhao, ) is a shift from the monocentric structure to the polycentric one, and rail transport affects decisively the development of subcentres (Garcia‐López, Hémet, & Viladecans‐Marsal, ).…”
