Niche tourism in Cyprus: conceptualising the importance of social entrepreneurship for the sustainable development of islands

Abstract: Abstract:The idiomorphic character of islands makes them important destinations worldwide. However, in an effort for islands to be competitive in the global economic sphere, their resources are often overutilised for the sake of tourism and the unregulated pressures of human development. “…The concept of social entrepreneurship refers to a process in which different resources are put together to produce economic and social values, the results of which are used to create economic welfare for communities while creating social benefits in the form of environmental, social and cultural sustainability (de Lange & Dodds, 2017). The results of this study which show the application of CBT and SE in the development of tourist villages contribute more to local people and communities and not to individual investors from outside the village, supporting the findings of the same study conducted on a number of cultural tourism in Cyprus (Boukas & Chourides, 2016), Croatia (Đurkin &Perić, 2017), andCanada (de Lange &Dodds, 2017). This is believed by Aquino et al (2018) that the application of Social entrepreneurship in tourism, referred to here as tourism social entrepreneurship, can be a holistic strategy for sustainable community development.…”

“…According to de Lange and Dodds (2017) the principles of SE, which develop a business not only for the purpose of individual prosperity but also for the welfare of society, are in line with the principles and values of sustainability. Research on a number of tourism industries in several countries shows that social entrepreneurship influences the development and sustainability of the tourism industry (Boukas & Chourides, 2016;de Lange & Dodds, 2017;Porter, Orams & Lück, 2017).…”

“…Through these alternative approaches employing social entrepreneurship, more desirable impacts throughout the tourism value chain can be generated (Boukas & Chourides, 2016), making TSE a form of social innovation. In an exploratory study that investigated the role of social enterprises in the tourism and hospitality industry, Ergul and Johnson (2011) found social entrepreneurship practices to be intertwined with fostering environment-friendly and sustainable business practices.…”

“…In the denotative first level, after the deconstructive analyzing method dismantling the videos into its separate components, it seems that the marketers have generally focused on nature as the main marketing element and on a target audience whose activity is well characterized and defined; this activity is one of relaxation but mostly sports activities. While this might appear to be part of an ongoing new approach that focuses on different tourism niche activities in order to create new tourism products in these destinations (Boukas and Chourides, 2016), it remains a rather small, passive marketing effort; the use of nature and its beauty predominates. It is less "packaged" as a product, even when the tourist is being shown as actively experiencing nature.…”

“…Nevertheless, an effort has been underway in recent years by some island marketers to reduce the focus on sea & sun activities, and to expand these islands' images based on culture, heritage and sustainability (Niles and Baldacchino, 2011). In addition, efforts have also been made to merge different niche tourism activities, even outside the summer season, in order to create a strong and multi-dimensional tourism product in these island destinations (Boukas and Chourides, 2016;Sharpley, 2007).…”
