NIH funding trajectories and their correlations with US health dynamics from 1950 to 2004

Abstract: To determine optimal future National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding levels, the longitudinal correlation of the level of investment in NIH research with population changes in the risk of specific diseases should be analyzed. This is because NIH research is the primary source of new therapies and treatments for major chronic diseases, many of which were viewed as relatively untreatable in the 1950s. NIH research is also important in developing preventative and screening strategies to support public health i… Show more

“…The noteworthy effects of investment in biomedical R&D include product development as described in this article and the ensuing job growth 2 as well as decline in morbidity and mortality rates, 3 with the promise of lower expenditures on health care and increased tax revenue. The patent trail for coronary stents reveals the important and complementary roles of government and private-sector investment in biomedical research and is consistent with an independent analysis by the National Bureau of Economic Research,…”

“…1 Although one can reasonably conclude that the NIH has had a dramatic positive impact on public health, this contention has been challenged by some analysts who argue that the speed of progress is far less than could have been accomplished with wiser investment of research funding. How should the success of our research enterprise be judged?…”

“…Transdisciplinary research may lead to new constructs, methods, frameworks, and Chapter 1 of the Workshop Volume (INTRO) 6 practical applications. The aims of such integrative science are to more rapidly produce solutions to pressing public health and scientific issues (Boyack, Klavans, & Börner, 2005;Manton, Gu, Lowrimore, Ullian, & Tolley, 2009). Sometimes-as in the case of the merging of physics, chemistry and biology into molecular biology-entire new fields of study are created and sustained (Sewell, 1989).…”
