“…Discussing the signal transduction of light-induced gene expression of NR, the effect of different photoreceptors, i.e., phytochrome versus chlorophyll (photosynthesis), should not be neglected. In one of the first papers investigating possible steps of the signal transduction of phytochrome-mediated NR gene expression, Bergareche et al (1994 [9] ) showed, in etiolated cucumber seedlings, that the effect of light could only be observed in the presence of exogenously applied Ca 2+ , and that a Ca 2+ ionophore mimicked the effect of red light. Further work to elucidate the signal transduction chain leading from phytochrome to NR gene expression was done by Sopory and co-workers (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India).…”

“…This suggests that white light induces NR gene transcription indirectly through photosynthates. On the other hand, the steady state NR mRNA levels of etiolated seedlings of various species increase in response to red (Rajasekhar et al, 1988;Melzer et al, 1989;Becker et al, 1992;Bergareche et al, 1994) and blue (Melzer et al, 1989) light. In the constitutive photomorphogenic mutant copl, NRZ, along with many other light-regulated genes, is derepressed in the dark (Deng et al, 1991).…”

“…The Ca 2+ -enhanced effect on histone phosphorylation coincides with the same stimulatory effect observed with R and FR light treatments (Figs. 1 and 2a) suggesting that Ca 2+ could be involved in this phytochrome response, as was suggested by Bergareche et al (1994) in their study of phytochrome control of NR activity in cucumber cotyledons. Fallon et al (1993) also provided evidence for the involvement of Ca 2+ -sensitive protein phosphorylation in the transduction sequence of R light signal in etiolated wheat leaf protoplasts.…”

“…Phytochromes control the nitrate reductase (NR) activity of Cucumis sativus cotyledons only in the presence of external calcium; and calcium ionophore mimics the effect of R light (Bergareche et al, 1994). In addition, phosphoinositides and protein phosphorylation are involved in the phototransduction pathway of NR response in cucumber cotyledons (Vidal et al, 2001).…”
