Assembly and utilization of hybrid maize that tolerant low N is one of technology application to resolve limitation of N for hybrid maize in the suboptimal field. The objectives of this research were to select the genotype of hybrid maize that tolerant low N and determine the plant characters to be used as selecting indicator for hybrid maize that tolerant low N. Research conducted at the Experimental Farm of Indonesian Cereal Research Institute, Maros from June-November 2014. This research was arranged in split plot design with three replication. The main plot was the dose of nitrogen fertilizer that consisted of 0 kg N/ha (without N fertilization), 100 kg N/ha (low dose of N) dan 200 kg N/ha (normal dose of N). The subplot was 60 hybrid maize genotypes including control varieties P-27, NK-33, Bisi-2, and Bima-3. The results showed that reduction of 67,13% grain yield was observed in the hybrid maize without N fertilization and reduction of 33,08% was observed in hybrid maize with low N fertilization. Based on tolerance index in low N stress, the varieties HLN03, HLN17, HLN18, HLN24, HLN25, HLN32, HLN35, HLN39, HLN46, and HLN47 were grouped into hybrid maize genotype that tolerant low N with grain yield range 8,37 to 10,02 t/ha, and the highest grain yield was resulted from genotype HLN 32 (10,02 t/ha). Stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that some characters, those are leaf width, male flowering age, leaf aging, percentage of abnormal cobs, cob length, cob diameter, and kernel yields can be used as indicators for hybrid maize that tolerant low N.
