This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different diet energy levels on animal performance. Specifically, this investigation examined the reproductive and histological aspects of the liver and gonads of female silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). These fish were fed for 210 days with diets containing 30% digestible protein (DP) and digestible energy (DE) that corresponded to 11.93, 12.98, 14.03, 15.07 and 16.12 MJ of DE kg−1. The initial and final lengths, weights, and weight gains, the visceral, gonadal, and hepatosomatic indices, and the histological parameters hepatocytes area and gonadal stages were evaluated. In the reproductive season, the fish were submitted to an artificial reproduction protocol and the percentage of spawning females and their relative and absolute fecundity were evaluated. DE did not affect reproductive or animal performance aspects (P > 0.05). Cytoplasmic vacuoles in hepatocytes were observed in higher DE levels. Thus, female Rhamdia quelen can be fed a diet of 30% DP with 11.93 MJ of DE kg−1 without reproductive or performance losses.

ABSTRACT. This study evaluated the quality of sperm cryopreserved with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or methanol, of Thailand tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) fed diet with different oil sources. eighty Thailand tilapia fed different oil sources (T1: linseed oil, T2: soybean oil, T3: fish oil, T4: corn oil) and were analyzed as for motility rate, and duration of motility in 'fresh sperm' and after cryopreservation. No significant difference was found for the final weight, total length, rate and duration of motility of fresh sperm in the different treatments. Significant differences were observed between fish, corn and linseed oil treatments on the rate of motility relative to other different oil sources with the cryoprotectant DMSO prior to freezing. After thawing, fish fed diet supplemented with fish oil presented a significantly higher rate and duration of sperm motility. Nevertheless, for better reproductive parameters after freezing, it is recommended the use of fish oil associated with cryoprotectant methanol.Keywords: freeze, cryoprotectant, DMSO, methanol.Criopreservação de sêmen de tilápia do Nilo, alimentada com diferentes fontes de óleo RESUMO. Este estudo avaliou a qualidade do esperma criopreservados com dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO) ou metanol, da tilápia Tailandesa (Oreochromis spp.), alimentada com diferentes fontes de óleo. Foram utilizadas 80 tilápias Tailandesas alimentadas com quatro fontes de óleo (T1: óleo de linhaça, T2: óleo de soja, T3: óleo de peixe, T4: óleo de milho). Foram analisadas a taxa de motilidade e a duração de motilidade do sêmen in natura após a criopreservação. Nenhuma diferença significativa foi encontrada para o peso final, comprimento total, taxa e duração da motilidade do esperma fresco nos diferentes tratamentos. Foram observadas diferenças significativas para óleo de milho, de peixe, de linhaça sobre a taxa de motilidade, utilizando o crioprotector DMSO antes da congelação. Após a descongelação, o peixe submetido a uma dieta suplementada com óleo de peixe apresentava uma taxa significativamente mais elevada e duração da motilidade dos espermatozoides. No entanto, para os melhores parâmetros de reprodução após a congelação, é recomendado o uso de óleo de peixe associado com crioprotetor metanol.

-The objective of this work was to evaluate the reproductive performance of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) fed diets containing sorghum, as a replacement for corn, supplemented or not with phytase. The experiment was carried out with 360 fish, with 16.02±0.58 g mean initial weight, fed diets in which low-tannin sorghum replaced corn at 0, 50, and 100%, with or without phytase supplementation (1,500 FTU per kilogram of feed). Diets supplemented with phytase or with 100% sorghum led to a reduction of visceral fat deposition and hepatic mass in males. In females, similar results were observed for diets containing phytase. Females fed sorghum-only diets, supplemented or not with phytase, had bigger oocytes. Males and females at the developing and final stages of gonadal maturation were found in all treatments. The replacement of corn by sorghum affects neither semen quality nor the fertilization rate of gametes. Therefore, complete replacement of corn with low-tannin sorghum in the diet can be performed without compromising the reproductive performance or the somatic indexes of silver catfish.Index terms: Rhamdia quelen, alternative food, breeding nutrition, histology, quality of gametes. Desempenho reprodutivo de jundiá alimentado com dietas com sorgo suplementadas com fitaseResumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho reprodutivo de jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) alimentado com dietas contendo sorgo em substituição ao milho, suplementadas ou não com fitase. O experimento foi realizado com 360 jundiás, com peso médio inicial de 16,02±0,58 g, alimentados com dietas compostas por 0, 50 e 100% de sorgo de baixo tanino, em substituição ao milho, com ou sem a suplementação de fitase (1.500 UFA por quilograma da dieta). Dietas com suplementação de fitase ou com 100% de sorgo reduziram a deposição de gordura visceral e a massa hepática nos machos. Nas fêmeas, o mesmo efeito foi observado quanto às dietas com suplementação de fitase. As fêmeas alimentadas com dietas apenas com sorgo, suplementadas ou não com fitase, apresentaram ovócitos maiores. Foram encontrados machos e fêmeas nas fases finais de desenvolvimento e maturação gonadal, em todos os tratamentos. A substituição do milho pelo sorgo não afeta a qualidade seminal nem a taxa de fertilização dos gametas. Portanto, a substituição completa do milho pelo sorgo de baixo tanino pode ser efetuada sem afetar os parâmetros reprodutivos e os índices somáticos do jundiá.Termos para indexação: Rhamdia quelen, alimento alternativo, nutrição de reprodutores, histologia, qualidade de gametas.
