“…In this period of adolescence, due to maturational processes, chronologically older boys are generally taller and heavier, stronger and faster, and exhibit greater cognitive abilities and greater sports experience, resulting in temporary performance advantages over their peers chronologically within the same age category 4 . In female athletes, RAE is not so evident 20 and tends to disappear in adulthood 8,14 and there are situations in which inverse RAE is observed 25 . Our findings for females do not corroborate the available literature.…”

“…In international basketball, RAE was often observed 8,[10][11][12][13] , although such phenomenon is not always observed 14,15 . In the context of Brazilian basketball, the only study with adult athletes did not find RAE in basketball players participating in the 2012 London Olympic Games 16 .…”

“…Were this premise true, the month of publication would significantly affect the article's 2-YRC, that is, a relative age effect. Relative age is considered as the chronological age difference between individuals (in this particular case, articles rather than individuals) within annually age-grouped cohorts (19,26) and has been regarded as positively influential in many settings (3,30), especially in most athletic performances (2,17,21,26), but not for all (6,14,31). So, our purpose was to confirm the existence of a relative age effect in the 2-YRC, as assessed by calendar years, for original articles published in the Journal of Applied Physiology (JAPPL).…”
