Abstract: A low incidence of nocardiosis following kidney transplantation was observed. Fatal cases occurred in patients with bacteremia and serious comorbid medical conditions, in whom early diagnosis and specific treatment was required.

“…Based on the fact that the number of such immunocompromised patients is increasing, it is reasonable to speculate that the number of patients with Nocardia infection is also increasing. The reported prevalence of nocardiosis among renal transplant patients is comparably low (0.7-1.4%); however, it could be life threatening if diagnosis or treatment is delayed [10]. Peleg et al [11] evaluated risk factors of nocardiosis among organ transplant recipients and identified three risk factors: history of CMV disease, high-dose steroids (20 mg prednisone for C1 month or [2 pulses of 1 g intravenous methylprednisolone), and high levels of calcineurin inhibitors ([15 lg/ml for tacrolimus in the preceding 30 days).…”

“…Intestinal recipients might be at increased risk to develop this infection. In general, nocardiosis is a rare infectious disease, with a reported prevalence of 0.7-4%, with a significantly higher incidence amongst transplant recipients [6][7][8]. Still it should be considered as a causative agent in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary diseases in the immunocompromised host.…”
