Aquaculture, being the fastest growing food production sector, has now become vital to the socioeconomic development of many countries. In India, aquaculture plays a significant role in food production, ensuring nutritional security, boosting agricultural exports, and generating job opportunities. The production of farmed fish has greatly expanded qualitatively and quantitatively in both freshwater and marine water regimes to fulfill the ever-growing demand. However, the occurrence of diseases is the main obstacle to sustainable aquaculture production, which has an impact on the socioeconomic status of fish farmers of the country. Viral diseases inflict irreparable damage to the aquaculture enterprise causing large-scale economic losses and ecological problems. Recently, there has been a spike in the incidence of new emerging viral diseases in diverse species of aquaculture species. Prophylactics by far being the only feasible method of viral disease control, the development of viral vaccines is highly imperative. A precise understanding of the disease pathology, etiological agent, and species susceptible to the specific diseases are highly essential in this perspective. The chapter highlights the emerging and reemerging viral diseases in the Indian aquaculture sector.

Indian fisheries and aquaculture is an important sector of food production, providing nutritional security to the food basket, contributing to the agricultural exports and engaging about fourteen million people in different activities. With diverse aquatic resources, the country has shown continuous and sustained increments in fish production since independence. Constituting about 6.3% of the global fish production, the sector contributes to 1.1% of the GDP and 5.15% of the agricultural GDP. The total fish production of 10.07 million metric tonnes, presently has nearly 65% contribution from the inland sector and nearly the same from culture fisheries. However, occurrence of disease has become a primary constraint to sustainable aquaculture production and product trade, thereby affecting the socioeconomic status of fishers in country like India. Different stress factors such as inadequate physicochemical and microbial quality of culture water, poor nutritional status and high stocking density can cause infection by opportunistic pathogens. Acute level of pollutants and suspended solids can directly bring about abnormalities and mortalities in seed fishes and adults. Different opportunistic bacterial pathogens and parasites cause devastating loss to fish industry in terms of high morbidity and mortality, diminishing growth and enhanced expenditure on use of chemicals as preventive and control measures. The prevention of fish diseases is essential for the betterment of the fisheries industry, the improvement of farming production, and the increase in fish resources. The details of fish diseases in Indian freshwater aquaculture system and potential for future development have been elaborated.

Isolation and characterization of Indian betanodavirus strain from infected farm-reared Asian seabassLates calcarifer(Bloch, 1790) juveniles

We isolated the infectious viral agent from infected Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch, 1790) using SSN‐1 cells. The isolated virus was cultivated in indigenous marine fish cell lines developed from ornamental sea anemone fish Amphiprion sebae and from Asian seabass. Reverse transcriptase PCR using betanodavirus‐specific primers gave positive results for the RNA from virus‐infected cells (hereinafter referred to as L. calcarifer nervous necrosis virus Indian strain – LCNNV‐In01). Serum neutralization test indicated partial homogeneity between Atlantic halibut nervous necrosis virus (AHNNV 692/9/98) and LCNNV‐In01. Transmission electron micrographs of the virus‐infected cell culture showed large numbers of 25–30‐nm particles in cellular vacuoles with features similar to betanodaviruses. Pathogenicity study in seabass fingerlings using cell culture grown virus revealed nervous necrosis in retinal cells following a 21‐day challenge trial. The nodavirus was reisolated from the infected fish using clownfish and seabass cell lines. Sequence analysis of the coat protein gene showed that the virus belonged to RGNNV group (GenBank Acc. No. ). The isolation of the nodavirus from seabass in India and its potential to grow in non‐homologous cell lines indicate the serious threat of the Indian strain of betanodavirus (LCNNV‐In01) to cultured and ornamental marine fish that have their hatchery production successfully standardized in India.
