Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, to struggle with the strangle: Oxygen availability in fatty livers

Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver disease in Western countries. Oxygen is a central component of the cellular microenvironment, which participate in the regulation of cell survival, differentiation, functions and energy metabolism. Accordingly, sufficient oxygen supply is an important factor for tissue durability, mainly in highly metabolic tissues, such as the liver. Accumulating evidence from the past few decades provides strong support for the existence of int… Show more

“…Hyperglycemia induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation that, in turn, induces endothelial dysfunction and cellular damage. Human serum albumin (HSA) is a major protein in the blood circulation, and the redox status of its thiol (SH) group plays the predominant role in redox regulation 15,16 , and it may accurately reveal oxidative stress and can act as a potential biomarker of oxidative stress and prognostic biomarker of diabetes 17 . Under physiological conditions, Cys34 of HSA exists in either the reduced or oxidized form.…”
