Non-Coding RNAs as Biomarkers of Tumor Progression and Metastatic Spread in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Abstract: Ovarian cancer is one of the most common causes of death among gynecological malignancies. Molecular changes occurring in the primary tumor lead to metastatic spread into the peritoneum and the formation of distant metastases. Identification of these changes helps to reveal the nature of metastases development and decipher early biomarkers of prognosis and disease progression. Comparing differences in gene expression profiles between primary tumors and metastases, together with disclosing their epigenetic regu… Show more

“…Deregulation of some miRNAs, such as miR-509-3p and miR-211, through HR inhibition, has been implicated in platinum-sensitive (Pt-S) cancers [ 50 , 51 ]. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), which exhibit a wide range of physiological functions, such as transcription regulation and scaffolding within cells, have been linked to OC risk, carcinogenesis and prognosis [ 52 , 53 ]. For instance, PCAT -1 leads to HRD in prostate cancer by suppressing BRCA2 [ 54 ].…”

“…LncRNA UCA1 promotes the immune escape of gastric cancer by upregulating programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) [ 9 ]. LncRNAs also play crucial roles in the tumorigenesis and progression of EOC, and some lncRNAs have the potential to be novel biomarkers for predicting the prognosis of EOC patients [ 10 ]. However, the profile of lncRNA involved in EOC still needs to be complemented.…”

“…Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) has also been investigated as a potential biomarker of tumor cells in many cancers [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ]. LncRNA can be detected in the bloodstream and correlated with tumor stage and treatment response [ 43 , 44 , 45 ].…”
