Non-communicable diseases in Mozambique: risk factors, burden, response and outcomes to date

Abstract: Mozambique is located on the East Coast of Africa bordering South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania and is one of the poorest countries in the world. Currently NCDs account for 28% of deaths in Mozambique. Risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use and poor diet are present in both urban and rural settings. “…Our results show a signifi cant association between patient's age and COPD prevalence in a spirometrybased data set (4,(37)(38)(39), and further point out the statistically signifi cant diff erences between spirometry and non-spirometry data, among which spirometry-based estimates generally appear more homogenous and internally consistent.…”

“…We believe that the interplay between local contexts and global factors influencing health is a particularly valuable and distinctive contribution of Globalization and Health . Much of the research explored the national and community contexts in which diseases occurred, with papers focusing upon how strategic plans can be developed at national level to tackle the burden of NCDs [41]. Papers also highlighted the importance of disseminating evidence from local research on health outcomes to national and global levels [42, 43].…”

“…It is a fully touch screen medical device which enables cardiac tests such as electrocardiograms (ECG) to be performed in remote underserved areas (rural areas for instance), while the test results are transferred wirelessly via mobile phone connection, to specialist physicians who can interpret them and provide assistance with case management. 21 20 Noubiap, Jingi, & Kengne, 2014 21 Moutou & Pastoret, 2015 " the authors underlined that the definition of emerging disease is not straightforward, as there are several different types of disease emergence. For example, there can be a 'real' emergence of a brand new disease, such as the emergence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the 1980s, or a geographic emergence in an area not previously affected, such as the emergence of bluetongue in northern Europe in 2006.…”
