Non-Hodgkin′s lymphoma: A rare diagnosis on cervicovaginal cytology

Abstract: Cervicovaginal smear screening is well known to reduce morbidity and mortality rates of invasive cervical carcinoma. Herein, we report a case of 56-year-old woman whose cervicovaginal smear was found to consist of malignant cells characterized by high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, scant rim of cytoplasm, coarsely granular nuclear chromatin and irregular nuclear membrane that were all reminiscent of a malignant lymphoma. Histopathological examination of the hysterectomy and unilateral adnexectomy specimen confirme… Show more

“…Primary female genital lymphomas are extremely rare neoplasms that make up 0.2% to 1.1% of all extra‐nodal cases 2 . The age range at the time of the diagnosis is generally wide (20–80 years) with an average age of 40–59 years old 5 . The two presented cases in this article were younger than the mean age reported in the medical literature.…”

In the literature review, DLBCL were the most frequent histologic type reported, as in the two cases introduced in the present article.…”

“…For example, Yalta et al describe a case of LUCX where the imunohistochemical profile showed positivity for LCA, vimentin, CD20, CD30, Bcl6, Bcl2. The Ki-67 index was found to be 80% (35). Based on the histopathological appearance of LUCX the most important histopathological differential diagnoses include follicular or chronic cervicitis, small cell carcinoma, endometrial stromal sarcoma, and granulocytic sarcoma (35).…”
