Nondestructive index profiling of long period gratings in photonic crystal fibres

Abstract: A numerical model of a long period grating in photonic crystal fibre fabricated by an electric arc is proposed that allows for the spectral characterisation of the grating. In the combination with the suggested model of the photonic crystal and the experimentally recorded grating growth it is used to find the index change induced by the electric arc.

“…It can be observed that the resonances of arc-induced gratings are located at shorter wavelengths, which can be attributed to the changes caused by the arc in terms of a reduction of the average core diameter and also due to annealing of intrinsic stresses that lead to a change of the refractive index of the core and cladding regions, as discussed previously. As far as the inscription of LPFGs in photonic crystal fibers is concerned this topic is discussed, for instance, in [11,37].…”

“…27). LPGs in two different types of PCF have been investigated for their sensitivity to temperature, bending, surrounding refractive index, and strain [48][49][50][51][52]. Both fibers show negligible temperature sensitivity (<6 pm/ ℃ ) whilst having significant sensitivity to other measurands.…”

“…The change in the refractive index of PCF exposed to the electric arc was not known at the time of the calculation hence the model was based on the unperturbed fibre. Later consideration, [27], showed that the index change is of the order of 4 10 − , which may lead to the error in the wavelength shift Λ ∆ ∂ ∂ = ∆ n n n eff δ λ of the order of 0.1nm corresponding to the error in sensitivity of several percents. The model can be improved by taking into account the strain distribution from Fig.…”
