“…Despite optimizing the COH protocols, nearly 20% of the retrieved oocytes remain immature at the GV or MI stages (Ashourzadeh et al , 2015). Such immature eggs are considered unsuitable for clinical use and they are commonly discarded from the IVF programme (Escrich et al , 2011).…”

“…Following controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH), approximately 20% of oocytes are immature (Ashourzadeh et al , 2015). These oocytes are usually discarded in the majority of the IVF programmes (Lee et al , 2016).…”

“…Rescue IVM of these immature oocytes can increase the chances of embryo access, especially in poor responders [1,2]. In addition, the IVM technique plays a highly important role in the elimination of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which is a possible side effect of gonadotropin stimulation in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) [3,4]. Oocytes have the ability to influence gene expression in cumulus cells (CCs) and mural cells, even in the presence of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which indicates that the intracellular behavior of CCs is affected by their close relationship with the oocyte [5].…”

“…However, the selection of cattle oocytes by the presence of a PLM signal does not seem to offer improvement in IVP outcomes yet. In addition, PLM has been used for the evaluation of the ZPB, which in humans has been associated to oocyte quality [116][117][118], although it is still under debate [119,120]. The few studies in cattle have shown that a lower ZPB is related to high quality oocytes and improved blastocyst development [121,122], whereas two studies in horses have reported conflicting results, indicating beneficial effects of both low ZPB [123] and high ZPB [124].…”
