Nonlinear dynamical analysis of GNSS data: quantification, precursors and synchronisation

Abstract: The goal of any nonlinear dynamical analysis of a data series is to extract features of the dynamics of the underlying physical and chemical processes that produce that spatial pattern or time series; a by-product is to characterise the signal in terms of quantitative measures. In this paper, we briefly review the methodology involved in nonlinear analysis and explore time series for GNSS crustal displacements with a view to constraining the dynamics of the underlying tectonic processes responsible for the kin… Show more

“…Recently, RQA has proved to be useful in diverse areas, such as economy, physiology, earth sciences, astrophysics, and engineering [10,22]. In particular, RQA has been used to investigate complex synchronization scenarios between coupled chaotic oscillators [24], emergence of GS in networks of structurally different timedelay systems [25,26], and precursors and synchronization of components of the tectonic system [27], among others. The oscillatory nature of diverse hydroclimate phenomena is wellknown, such as those associated with the annual cycle of insolation (12 months), and the quasi-periodic El Niño-Southern Oscillation (3-4 years), which constitutes the most important modulator of interannual climate variability worldwide [28].…”

“…Figure 2b is a period RP, which is shown as a long diagonal structure, and it represents a periodic oscillation system. Figure 2c is the RP of a chaotic system, shorter diagonal lines, small blocks, and single dots can be found as the suggest of chaos [22]. There are also microscopic features, such as single dots, diagonal lines, and vertical and horizontal lines in the RP.…”

“…The distance chart carries information about the distances between the points of the trajectory. Other informative features of the recurrent diagrams are the topology and texture of the location of the points of the trajectory, the structure of which characterizes the hidden features of the process under study [11,12,13].…”
