Nonlinear dynamics of the filamentation of the resistive instability of a current-carrying plasma

Abstract: The filamentation of the resistive instability in a weakly ionized quasi-neutral current-carrying plasma in the diffusion frequency region in the nonlinear regime is investigated. By using the magnetohydrodynamics equations and Ampere's law and assuming that the plasma is non-isothermal and inhomogeneous, the evolution of the magnetic field diffusion into the plasma is described by the Lienard nonlinear differential equation. Furthermore, it is shown that the departure of the profiles of the magnetic field and… Show more

“…Among many current-driven instabilities, the filamentation instability has attracted a great deal of attention due to its numerous applications in various fields (Young et al 1996;Che et al 2011;Shokri et al 2002;Niknam and Shokri 2008;Mohammadhosseini et al 2010;Huntington et al 2011;Allen et al 2012;Niknam et al 2012Niknam et al , 2013. This instability is a relevant instability for the perturbations which are perpendicular to the initial drift velocity direction and have been the subject of some studies in the context of dusty plasmas Khorashadizadeh et al 2011 have performed a theoretical study on the filamentation instability of a current-driven dusty plasma in dust ion-acoustic frequency range by using the Lorentz transformation formulas.…”

“…There has been a great deal of interest in the study of the nonlinear dynamics of instabilities in plasma which have become one of the most important subjects of plasma physics [1][2][3]. Among them, streaming instabilities are important in particle heating and acceleration in space plasmas and astrophysical phenomena [4][5][6].…”
