Nonlinear Models of Thermo-Viscoelastic Materials

Abstract: The paper develops a general scheme for viscoelastic materials, where the constitutive properties are described by means of measures of strain, stress, heat flux, and their time derivatives. The constitutive functions are required to be consistent with the second law of thermodynamics. Indeed, a new view is associated with the second law: the non-negative expression of the entropy production is set equal to a further constitutive function. The introduction of the entropy production as a constitutive function a… Show more

“…The approach through rate equations turn out to be advantageous thanks as well to some ideas and results established in [ 8 ], in which the entropy production is viewed as a constitutive function, while a representation formula yields the general result ( 28 ) for solids and the analogue for fluids. The completeness of the scheme allows us to find the stress rate in magneto-hypoelasticity, magneto-hyperelasticity, and (dissipative) magneto-viscoelasticity.…”

“…The mathematical complexity of this formulation is too complicated for use in many situations. Another approach involves objective rate equations by means of a thermodynamically consistent scheme which naturally allows the construction of nonlinear viscoelastic models (see [ 8 ]). More recently, in [ 9 , 10 ], nonlinear mechanical viscous effects are described by assuming a semi-continuum theoretical model with a geometric nonlinearity.…”
