Normal Reference Plots for the Bioelectrical Impedance Vector in Healthy Korean Adults

Abstract: Background Accurate volume measurement is important in the management of patients with congestive heart failure or renal insufficiency. A bioimpedance analyser can estimate total body water in litres and has been widely used in clinical practice due to its non-invasiveness and ease of results interpretation. To change impedance data to volumetric data, bioimpedance analysers use equations derived from data from healthy subjects, which may not apply to patients with other conditions. Bioelectrical … Show more

“…PhA levels in Asians are generally lower compared to other ethnic groups [9][10][11]. The mean PhA of men and women were 6.5 ± 0.5° and 5.3 ± 0.5°, respectively, with a significant difference (p < 0.001) to healthy Korean [12]. PhA has been known as a prognostic factor for assessing cell health, however, its biological indications remain to be elucidated.…”

“…Information pertaining to demographic characteristics and medical and surgical history was collected through detailed interviews and medical record review conducted by experienced nurses. Body composition including muscle mass (whole body lean body mass minus bone mineral content) was evaluated using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer (InBody S10; InBody, Seoul, Korea) with measuring frequencies of 1, 5, 50, 250, 500, and 1000 kHz [ 17 ]. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was calculated as the sum of the muscle mass of both arms and legs.…”

Participants were instructed to fast for > 8 h before the examination to minimize the possible effects of food and water intake.…”
