Normalization of ZZ instanton amplitudes in minimal string theory

Abstract: We use insights from string field theory to analyze and cure the divergences in the cylinder diagram in minimal string theory with both boundaries lying on a ZZ brane. We focus on theories with worldsheet matter consisting of the (2, p) minimal model plus Liouville theory, with total central charge 26, together with the usual bc-ghosts. The string field theory procedure gives a finite, purely imaginary normalization constant for non-perturbative effects in minimal string theory, or doubly non-perturbative effe… Show more

“…Even though both expressions are formal, combining the two leads to an unambiguous result. This approach has been applied to ten-dimensional type IIB string theory [18,19], compactification of type II string theories on Calabi-Yau threefolds [20,21] as well as two-dimensional string theory [22] and minimal string theory [23]. In each case the result agrees with earlier predictions based on symmetries.…”

“…Nevertheless, we show how we can organize the contributions to Z A and Z M , both from the open string channel and from the closed string channel, using character formulas for the representations of the extended N = 2 superconformal algebra that underlies the theory associated with Calabi-Yau compactifications [45][46][47][48]. The relevant formulae can be found in (D. 23), (D.18), (D.28) and (D. 44). This can facilitate computation of Z A and Z M in theories that are obtained from solvable models by small deformations.…”

“…In this context it is interesting to ask what is the role of Stokes numbers in the minimal string theory. There is a strong connection between ZZ-brane amplitudes and Stokes numbers that has been thoroughly established in the literature [65,79,98,99]. It seems interesting to explore this connection further.…”

“…Indeed, in the physics literature the most interesting calculations arise from matrix models and minimal strings. Herein, "canonical" Stokes data has an eigenvalue-tunneling or ZZ-brane [96] one-loop amplitude interpretation [97][98][99] and may be computed directly from the matrix integral, for both P I [77,80,39] and P II [82,40] (see as well [65,81,83,84]). For all multicritical and minimal string theoretic models, these "canonical" Stokes coefficients were recently computed in [95].…”
