This study explores sub-monthly variation for the circulation and convection in the western North Pacific during July and August. The sub-monthly variability is dominated by a wave-like pattern that propagates north-northwestward from the northeast of Papua New Guinea, to the East China Sea. The wavelength and phase speed are about 4000 km and 5 m s À1 , respectively. This feature fluctuates in a 7-30 day timescale, with the spectral peak at 12.5 days. The vertical structure exhibits a barotropic structure below 500 hPa, which gradually tilts northwestward in upper levels near Taiwan and southern Japan. For more than 70% of cases which reveal the wave-like fluctuation, recurving tropical cyclones are found to occur concurrently with the wave-like pattern. These recurving tropical cyclones are likely part of the wave-like pattern, and may not be regarded as isolated vortices. The wave-like pattern occurs in a large-scale flow, which is characterized by an enhanced monsoon trough extending eastward into the Philippine Sea, and a strong ridge protruding westward from the subtropical high. It is suggested that the cyclonic phase of the wave-like pattern provides a favorable environment for the genesis, growth, and movement of the recurving tropical cyclones. The monsoon trough/subtropical ridge fluctuation, the wave-like pattern, and tropical cyclones, which represent phenomena in three different time and spatial scales, form a multi-scale system that affects the sub-monthly variability of the circulation, and convection, in the western North Pacific during the boreal summer.

The authors argue that certain aspects of the rotational, synoptic-scale disturbances of the wind field that are observed in ITCZ or monsoon trough regions can be understood by considering the linear response of a dry, initially resting atmosphere to a pulse of heating whose amplitude and spatial and temporal scales are characteristic of a large mesoscale convective system. The key points are that short Rossby waves have small intrinsic group and phase velocities, and that a heating pulse projects much more energy on the Rossby modes if it is located slightly off rather than on the equator. It follows that synoptic-scale Rossby waves, with characteristics broadly similar to those of observed disturbances, should be present in ofd equatorial regions of persistent deep convection, since large mesoscale convective systems tend to develop in such regions.

Precursor synoptic‐scale disturbances associated with tropical cyclogenesis in the South China Sea during 2000–2011

Precursor synoptic disturbance characteristics associated with 35 tropical cyclone (TC) genesis events in the South China Sea (SCS) during 2000-2011 were examined. All genesis events occurred between May and December. Six types of precursor synoptic disturbances are identified, and their low-level composite patterns are constructed. They are synoptic-scale wave train (29%), TC energy dispersion (14%), Pacific easterly wave (9%), Borneo vortex (11%), TC southwesterly shear induced vortex (23%), and others (14%). In 13 (22) of 35 genesis cases, precursor perturbations originated within (outside of) the SCS.The satellite IR image data are used to analyse mesoscale convective activity prior to TC genesis. It is found that mesoscale convective systems were observed at 83% of the genesis cases, whereas 54% of the genesis cases experienced multiple mesoscale convective system development at a single time.Most of synoptic disturbances associated with the tropical cyclogenesis occurred in the region where atmospheric quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBW) and Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) modes are in an active phase. The synoptic disturbances-associated TC genesis events in the SCS are strongly modulated by atmospheric low-frequency oscillations (especially the MJO). Meanwhile, favourable precursor sea surface temperature signals are observed, primarily on the 10-to 20-day and 20-to 90-day timescales.
