“…The carotid body arteries are provided with marked intra-arterial endothelial cushions at their origins, probably inhibiting the retrograde flow of arterial blood (TAGUCHI et al, 1992) or regulating the inflow of arterial blood into the carotid bodies (McDoNALD and LARUE, 1983). LIFSON and LASSA (1981) injected silicone latex, India ink, hematoxylin and microsphere into the rabbit pancreas, and reported that the periductal plexus received blood from the lobular plexus. In our rat samples, as in the previously studied human samples (MURAKAMI et al, 1992), few channels were reproduced between the capillary plexuses of the exocrine lobules and the extralobular ducts.…”

“…It is evident, therefore, that the hormone content of such blood will exert its action either on duct cells or on endocrine cells associated with the ducts (buds and single scattered cells). Few studies on ductular blood supply have been carried out (Lifson and Lassa 1981;Ohtani et al 1983Ohtani et al ,1986Ohtani and Wang 1997). Pancreatic ducts have been reported to receive blood from a direct arterial supply and from connections with the acinar capillary network (Lifson and Lassa 1981;Ohtani et al 1983).…”

“…Within the lobule, in contrast, the exocrine acini and their connecting intercalated and intralobular secretory ducts are commonly supplied. LIFSON and LASSA (1981) arterially injected silicone latex, India ink, hematoxylin or microsphere into rabbit pancreas and traced it under the light microscope. Noticing that the ductal plexus received blood from the exocrine acini, they conceived of the following route: islet capillaries-acinar (lobular) capillaries-ductal plexuses.…”
