The influence of different carbon and nitrogen sources, of ethanol concentration, the optimal pH, temperature and medium composition were evaluated on extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) synthesis and bacterial growth of Gluconacetobacter hansenii LMG1524, and preliminary characterization of EPS was investigated. The highest EPS yields were obtained using glycerol and ammonium sulphate as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The increase of ethanol concentration in the medium did not influence the EPS synthesis but reduced the bacterial growth. The optimum temperature and pH for polysaccharides production were respectively 25˚C and 5; whereas for cell growth were respectively 30˚C and 4. The optimal culture medium composition was determined as follows: 10 g/L sucrose, 0.892 g/L (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , 0.34 g/L NaNO 3 , 3 mL acetic acid, 1.5 g/L KH 2 PO 4 , 1.5 g/L K 2 HPO 4 and 0.6 g/L MgSO 4 . The polysaccharides produced were of 14 and 10 polymerization degrees (DP) and constituted mainly of glucose, galactose and mannose, in relative percent of 36.36, 33.94 and 22.42, respectively.

Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe grisea is considered to be one of the most devastating diseases in most rice-growing regions. In order to search for an effective agent to protect against rice infection, the elicitor activity of alginooligosaccharides was evaluated in germinating rice, in which accumulation of oryzalexin C could be detected sensitively. The maximal elicitor activity was detected in germinating rice seedlings when the fractions of alginate degradation products with a degree of polymerization of 7.9 (S3) and 6.5 (S4) were used as elicitors. Algino-oligosaccharides could induce the enzyme activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase, peroxidase and catalase in rice plant cells for protection of the plant against the invading pathogen. With utilization of algino-oligosaccharides, the disease index caused by Magnaporthe grisea could be reduced from 17.74% to 10.81% and the protection efficacy was 39.06%. These findings suggest that algino-oligosaccharides could be applied as a biological agent to control rice blast disease.

Bacitracin ABC transporter comprises a self-resistance system in Bacillus licheniformis against its own product (bacitracin). Elicitation effects of carbohydrates on transcription level of bcrABC genes encoding bacitracin ABC transporter system were investigated through quantification by real-time PCR. Increases of 68% and 29% in bacitracin A yields after 36 h were achieved in cultures supplemented with oligoguluronate and oligoguluronate/mannan oligosaccharide combination. Cultures with combined elicitors showed 3, 2.6 and 3 transcriptional fold-changes in bcrA, bcrB and bcrC, respectively, compared to control. This could be due to a secondary effect caused by increased bacitracin A yield through elicitation.
