Novel Approaches to Teaching Aging and Disability: Active Learning Through Design and Exploration

Abstract: Active learning emphasizes student engagement and collaboration instead of more passive learning, which involves primarily listening to lectures in the classroom setting. The benefits of active learning are many with an emphasis on the expansion of higher-order processing and critical thinking skills. Active learning can be found in many best practice approaches in the Medicine, Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (MSTEM) fields. Hack-a-thon and hack events are examples of active learning. These are gaining … Show more

“…Istovremeno, aktivni oblici učenja interakcijom sa starijim osobama prepoznaju se kao nužnost u gerontološkoj edukaciji. Ono što nedostaje je temeljita analiza optimalnog odnosa između aktivnog i pasivnog učenja i specifični prijedlozi aktivnih modaliteta učenja (13). Nastavnici pokazuju tradicionalno razumijevanje procesa podučavanja i učenja u kojem se osjećaju najsigurnije.…”

“…At the same time, active learning forms, through interactive work with the elderly, are being recognized as necessary in gerontic education. What is lacking is a thorough analysis on the optimal relationship between active and passive learning and specific proposals for active learning modalities (13). Educators showed a traditional understanding of the teaching and learning process, in which they feel the safest.…”

“…The benefits of active learning have been evidenced in teaching and learning across a diversity of disciplines. Students were found to have a better understanding of new knowledge, higher level of cognitive achievements, improved knowledge transformability, and increased critical thinking abilities (Michael, 2006; Revell & Ayotte, 2020).…”
