“…Bioreactors such as biofilters and biotrickling filters are commonly applied for odor and volatile organic compound (VOC) control but less so for ammonia emission control. , In traditional biofilters, ammonia is absorbed onto the damp packing material and then further nitrified to nitrite and then nitrate. Biofiltration of ammonia can be very cost effective especially at low concentrations, since biofilters are simple to build and require low maintenance. , There are several studies demonstrating effective removal of ammonia at low nitrogen loading ranging from 0.85 to 22.5 gN m –3 h –1 , and many full-scale systems are operational. However, under medium or high ammonia loading conditions, biofilters usually accumulate free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) in the damp volume of their packed beds, which can have an inhibitory effect on the activity of nitrifying bacteria and cause process upset . Therefore, regular flushing to remove accumulated ammonium and metabolites and tight control of pH are needed to avoid failure of biofilters over the long term …”
