With the first case of a highly infectious virus named Coronavirus in Wuhan, China in December 2019, this deadly virus was declared a pandemic by WHO. COVID-19 was found to be very similar to patients infected with MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. The virus was transmitted from bats to humans through some unidentified intermediary. Since its introduction in humans, it has infected 118000 people, killing 3583 till last week of May 2020 in India. The reported route of transmission is inhalation or direct contact with the infected surface or patients. This symptomatic disease includes symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue, and in some severe patients, it may cause multiple organ failure, pneumonia, severe or acute respiratory diseases. In some cases people may be asymptomatic till 14 d of infection. The patients with mild illness are usually isolated and others are prevented with protective measures such as medical mask, hand hygiene. In the present article, the epidemiology, route of transmission, clinical symptoms, prevention, management, treatment and role and responsibility of health workers is overviewed on the basis of published research and review articles and current state of knowledge.

Covid-19, an infectious disease caused by coronavirus spreads by salivary droplets or nasal discharge from an infected person during sneezing or coughing. This infectious disease is caused by a novel coronavirus, SARS CoV-2 shares the same structure with that of the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Most of the people who are infected with Covid-19 will experience respiratory illness and can be treated with antiviral drugs and or a combination of antiviral drugs and supportive therapies. Many medical investigational approaches are being investigated to design possible treatment strategies and possible avenues for Covid-19 therapy. Potential strategies for the treatment of Covid-19 include antiviral medication, the combination of interferons and antiviral drugs, interleukin inhibitors. Recent studies show that the use of plasma from survivors can help patients in recovering from the disease. This approach of using plasma is termed as convalescent plasma therapy. Another newer technology that includes the construction of a recombinant vaccine is gaining importance for further investigation. The other major approaches include the therapeutic use of serine protease inhibitors, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, ammonium chloride in definite doses. New study approaches include investigation on the production of monoclonal antibodies has gained a way for further clinical research. An effective supportive therapy includes extracorporeal membrane oxygenation could be considered as rescued therapy for the patients having respiratory distress. After sufficient clinical data is obtained and by taking all these approaches into consideration, the treatment protocol can be designed to treat Covid-19 successfully.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was characterized as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. The present pandemic has caused an intolerable impact on the health structure as well as the pharmaceutical sector, which in ultimatum has created enormous issues in the everyday lives of the patient community. On the other hand, the situation may appear in short and long-term time-horizon and need identification along with appropriate planning to reduce their socio-economic burden. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is the world's third-largest drug producer by volume. India supplies affordable and low-cost generic drugs to millions of people around the globe and operates more than 250 United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and United Kingdom Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (UKMHRA) approved plants. Given the Indian pharmaceutical industry, the source of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for multiple diseases is much crucial part of the Pharma industry’s strategic plan to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. China is the top global producer and exporter of APIs by volume and Indian pharmaceutical industries are also rely heavily on APIs from China for the production of their medicine formulations by importing around 70 percent of the total requirement. However, the present pandemic situation has exposed the world's over-reliance on China in terms of API import and bound world leaders to fig. out sustainable alternatives.
