Novel cost-efficient contactless distributed monitoring concept for smart battery cells

Abstract: The market breakthrough of electric vehicles is mainly delayed by the still too high costs of the battery system. The novel distributed battery cell monitoring and management concept presented in this paper allows a significant reduction of the final battery pack costs. Further, due to economies of scale, it provides reduced development costs and much lower time-to-market. The proposed concept provides a contactless cost-efficient data transmission interface with capacitive coupling, thus making the developmen… Show more

“…Figure 2 shows the general case where each layer of the platform is implemented in a dedicated hardware unit. Although there are interesting designs of the cell layer in a cell monitoring unit (CMU) [24][25][26], it is more common to find the cell layer merged with the module layer [27,28]. The module management unit (MMU) implements in that case the cell layer functions also, such as voltage and temperature monitoring of the module cells, as well as thermal management [21].…”

“…Dans ce cas, elle doit être déconnectée du reste de la structure. Un superviseur -le Système de Management des Batteries ou BMS (Batteries Management System -s'emploie à ces opérations de surveillance du SoC [10] et du pilotage de l'équilibrage [11]. « Pour garantir une bonne durée de vie du système, le BMS doit en premier lieu pouvoir surveiller les grandeurs qui sont préjudiciables aux cellules qui composent la batterie.…”

“…For battery thermal management in EVs, research on temperature sensors to monitor the temperature of the battery cell surface and on the cooling layer of the graphite sheet on the battery cell surface to cool down the temperature are in progress. However, in these studies, temperature monitoring and heat cooling require two separate devices [4][5][6]. For 3D ICs, as the integration density increases, the heat density also increases.…”
